Design Space is the free software that powers every Cricut machine. It can look intimidating at first, but once you learn a handful of tools, it becomes second nature. Here is a true beginner's walkthrough to get you cutting with confidence.
Getting Started
Download Design Space on your computer or mobile device and sign in with a free Cricut account. When you open a new project, you land on the Canvas, which is your blank workspace where every design comes together.
Understanding the Canvas
The Canvas has a few key areas. The left panel adds images, text, shapes, and uploads. The top toolbar edits whatever you select. The right Layers panel shows every element in your project and how they stack.
The Tools You Will Use Most
- Text: Add words and choose from hundreds of fonts.
- Shapes: Drop in circles, squares, and hearts as building blocks.
- Upload: Bring in your own images and SVG files.
- Weld: Join layers into one continuous shape.
- Attach: Hold pieces in place so they cut exactly as arranged.
Making Your First Cut
Once your design looks right, click Make It. Design Space shows you the cutting mat preview, where you confirm the layout. Then you choose your material, load your mat, and press the flashing button on your machine. That is it.
